Evaluation of an anger management
program for aggressive boys in inpatient treatment.

Used a controlled group design with
multimethod assessment to evaluate an anger management program.
14 aggressive boys (aged 9 yrs 8 mo to 14 yrs 8 mo) being
treated in a state psychiatric facility for anger
management/aggression problems were randomly assigned to 1 of 2
treatment groups. Anger management Ss received 18 half-hr
sessions of an individually tailored modified stress inoculation
package, including discussion of components of anger,
relaxation, modeling and rehearsal of adaptive self-statements,
and role playing of anger-provoking situations. Attention
control Ss had the same number of sessions and same formats but
addressed emotions other than anger. Assessment included a
self-report children's inventory of anger and a situational
self-report inventory; teacher ratings, including the Conners
Teacher Rating Scale, the Locus of Conflict Rating Scale, and
the Self-Control Rating Scale; behavioral observations; and unit
ratings, such as the Behavior Problem Checklist and the Devereux
Child Behavior Scale. Results from follow-up self-reports reveal
changes in expectation of response to provocation for anger
management groups but not attention controls. Changes did not
occur on other measures of aggressive behavior. Suggestions for
further adaptation of the program to more effectively treat the
anger-related aggressive responding of emotionally disturbed
children are presented. (30 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c)
